Research

Here is my document analyzing the conventions of Severance episode 1

In class we watched Episode 1, Season 1 of the Apple TV Show ‘Severance’ This is a thriller show and follows the narrative of a man named Mark who lives a split live between his personal life and his work life.

In this episode we see typical thriller conventions of suspense, plot twists and cliff hangers. These are shown through Petey coming back to find Mark to reveal the truth about the workplace and Mark’s boss being his next door neighbor. When we begin our coursework we will have the choice of creating a thriller film opening, therefore we are doing research into the genre to help make decisions.

Below is my essay about the crime genre. In class we went over Nick Lacey’s Repertoire of Elements theory and Steve Neale’s genre theory and discussed how genre’s have changed over time. We also discussed how film companies need to keep common genre conventions to encourage audiences to view the media.

Production Company Logo

Marvel Studios was founded in 1993 By Marvel Entertainment. Its current parent companies also include The Walt Disney Company who bought Marvel Entertainment for 4 billion dollars in 2009. Marvel Studios primarily makes films of the superhero fiction genre. Its logo reflects the evolution of their media from comics to films and their roots as a comic book company.

During the creation of our logo I took elements of the story about government corruption and indie film studios and used a picture of a man shushing someone with a two tone color to signify the silent nature behind crimes and corruption.

Analyzing Film Opening:

Movie/TV Show Inspiration

The following media was used to generate our idea for my groups final film

  • Opening to the Joker – Touching on corruption and societal issues this film features a few camera shots we would like to feature in our short film as well as assisting in the brainstorming process
  • This is America – This music video also touches on corruption and problems in society and the last shot (3:54-4:04) has a shot we got inspiration on for the film
  • This scene inspired the scene where the main character is watching the antagonist. Our main character also has a sense of Justice and uses methods like digital piracy. Therefore this was a good research media for our film.
