Research task 1

Today in class we wated the first episode of the Apple TV show “Severance” The show is said to be a thriller and opens with a man called mark walking through a seemingly empty and blank office, leaving viewers hooked for more wanting to know what’s so strange about this weirdly bleak and depressing office. In our coursework we have the option to make a thriller movie and so we are researching the genre to learn its film conventions to help us with our decision

Research task 2

In class we have been learning about the Macro element Genre, looking at different theores regarding how genre effects a film along with how the choice to use different conventions can affect the audience. This is my genre essay on the thriller genre, which i selected out of a large pool of options, i wrote it on how the thriller genre has changed over time and how audience preference has shifted in what they expect when they go into a “thriller movie” I also then looked at all the different technological changes made in the industry seeing how that has then evolved that specific genre

Despite there being several different ways to open a film, there’s a few conventions that often make an appearance across the start of most movies, with these becoming the most common

Production Logo and Film Title A film opening will always show a logo that executed the production, this is used and show to gain brand recognition, with people potentially seeing other films made by the brand if the current movie is good
Establishing the genre The movie will always try start the movie by establishing a gerne, this is important to be done as it allows the producers to set both the tone and mood quickly for the viewers, which can keep them hooked until the end of the movie depending on the genre
Character Introduction Most movies often spend their into, introducing the main characters to the viewers once again highlighting the tone of the movie based off the mood of the characters shown, however character introduction can also be used as a goof shock factor, with some characters introduced being instantly killed off to show the genre

Research task 4

For the first clip we decided to use Home Alone. We used this clip of a brick being thrown at a window, this helps us as it is useful to see a professional made film and how they frame and film the actors. As the brick is being thrown the characters reaction can be seen which is what we would like to use within in our opening to show the deep emotions. As well as how they focus on only the window being broken which is a big part of our opening because it shows the start of the persons ‘cracked memories’ showing the basis of our movie. The clip also shows a kid throwing a rock at window which also shows how our movie is a flashback, so kid is throwing stones at a window.

The Conjuring

We analysed this clip to see the different micro elements used to create the atmosphere of a horror film, looking at specific elements with how lighting and sound is used to create tension and suspense for the audience within the scene. we also looked at how the producers create enigma to help us learn how to keep the audience in the dark during our scene, keeping the story mysterious elements, allowing us to let the audience figure things out themselves instead of simply telling them.

Moon knight

This scene uses an editing technique to show the change of time; we are going to use this as inspiration for our flashback. We are using it because it impacts the audience through strong visual and sound. The sudden cuts to black and the sound cutting in and out helps the audience understand that something happened during the blackout, although we are going to use it to signify our flashback. Which creates meaning in our opening because the movie revolves around these flashbacks to create a sense of enigma and an eerie atmosphere.

This is my groups logo, we knew as soon as we started designing that we wanted to have this design with a house replacing the A in HOA, as it gives off a sense of professionalism with the minimalistic design, along with a sense of mystery at the black background leaving the audience intrigued.
