One example if this are the feelings of tension and unease being created through the flashbacks and flash forwards in the opening scene, as they give the audience some possible questions regarding the plot. Another example of a typical Thriller convention shown in Severance is suspense: One main time where suspense is created is in the ending scene, when the audience is left on a cliff hanger after being reintroduced to to Harmony, Mark’s boss at work. As a thriller being one of the options for our final coursework, researching Severance will help to aid us on our decision.

Research 1- Thriller ConventionsDownload

How has the Crime genre been moulded by audience and technology?

 Media EssayDownload

In class, we were tasked with writing an essay regarding a certain genre and the ways in which it has been shaped by audience and technology. We wanted our main kitchen scene to have a similar vibe to this section of the opening.

Drive (2011) – The suspense created in this scene through the many different micro elements such as sound and lighting in particular was something we wanted to try recreate in our film opening. Also the flickering television clip was another we wanted to add into our opening scene

Se7en (1995) – We liked the title scene from Se7en due to the mystery and enigma of the scene. There was many different elements to this opening, especially containing usual thriller conventions and another eerie atmosphere created by the flashing, black and white style colour theme, the fonts of words, and the elements regarding the hand – which in our production plays a large part.

Production Company Research:

In class we were tasked with research about a set production company, especially regarding their logo.
