Research 1: Thriller Conventions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

During a couple of class periods, we watched the first episode of the Apple TV thriller: Severance. This show follows the life surrounding a man named Mark. The general plot line of Severance, revolves around a work place called Lumin, that offers a service called Severance, which allows for people to split their brain into work life and home life – when you are at home you can’t remember anything regarding work and vice versa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Techniques<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the course of this first episode, we see a variety of common conventions often seen in a thriller. One example if this are the feelings of tension and unease being created through the flashbacks and flash forwards in the opening scene, as they give the audience some possible questions regarding the plot. Another example of a typical Thriller convention shown in Severance is suspense: One main time where suspense is created is in the ending scene, when the audience is left on a cliff hanger after being reintroduced to to Harmony, Mark’s boss at work. As a thriller being one of the options for our final coursework, researching Severance will help to aid us on our decision.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

In class, we were tasked with writing an essay regarding a certain genre and the ways in which it has been shaped by audience and technology. I chose to do mine on the crime genre as it had the most appeal to me.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Again in class we got set a task to analyse certain film openings from various genres in order to help us gain knowledge that we can use when making our own film opening. We watched two film openings, respectively being Baby Driver and Inception. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
