Free Workshop
The purpose of this task was to begin to apply our micro element knowledge to a practical project. We worked in small groups of three and were given the prompt of “You haven’t left the house in months. If you don’t leave today, you never will”. With this prompt we had to create a concept for a 30 second scene of a film and complete a pitch for the film. In this task we brainstormed ideas, made a mood board, created a storyboard and then made and presented our pitch. Our audience feedback was to improve clarity of some ideas so in future I need to improve explanations of design elements and reasonings. In the next prelim task where we create a concept and film it, I want to focus on displaying clear genre conventions and working effectively within a group.
Story Board / Mood Board

Peliminary Task 2:
Pre-Production
For this task we are creating a one-minute film in groups of 4. Our prompt includes the following criteria: must include dialogue of “He’s gone”, must include a prop of significance, and there must be some kind of unanswered question. After brainstorming ideas based on this prompt my group and I decided on the concept of a shady money deal with the mafia within the crime genre. We then divided up our pre-production tasks and I worked with malachy on creating a storyboard for our piece.
Filming
For our short scenes we had decided to film inside one of the music practice rooms, this is because this location was easy to access, had optimal lighting, and had a small confined space which helped build the tension in the scene. My responsibilities during this part of the process were planned to be acting/camera operator/assistant. I found the filming process fun with costumes helping create an atmosphere in the scene. However, some challenges we met were, various difficulties with cameras mainly dead batteries and the time constraints that came with replacing cameras and charging the batteries. Based on my experiences, something I want to do differently during my coursework piece is effectively managing time and organising possible issues prior to filming such as ensuring the cameras are charged beforehand.
Editing and Final Cut
For my personal edit of our footage, I decided to use capcut because its simple and I don’t have any experience with editing software. I am pleased with…(something you like about your edit/something about editing that went well). Something that was challenging was……. From this task I have learnt… (what have you learnt that you will apply to your next piece of coursework).
My group and I all shared our personal edits and decided on Malachy’s one to showcase to the class. We liked this cut the best because It encorporated editing features which enhanced the mood and atmosphere while also enhancing the film with genre conventions.
