Production 1: Brainstorm/concept creation
This week we have been divided up into our coursework groups and have begun to explore possible themes, narratives and ideas for our film opening. So far, we are considering creating a film within the crime/dystopian/political thriller genre about a teenager who while initially looking for books to pirate online, comes across corporate documents that are used to expose an AI healthcare mega corporation for exploitative and unethical psychological experiments used to train their newest AI model.
Moodboard by Alina:

Production company name brainstorm:
- Brethren of the Coast Productions
- The Scintilla Foundation
- Nightfall Productions
- Archival Studios
- Incomprehensible Foundation
- Mutant Entertainment
- Awkward Silence Pictures
- Silent Waters Productions
My roles and responsibilities: Main narrative/story writer, script writer, filming, directing, post-production (editing, audio, sequencing)
Original script draft:
Music plays, opens to man running along a street in suit jacket (billowing out behind him)
News reporter – So Mr Ibarra, how do you feel about your anniversary as company chairman?
Albert Ibarra – Well since I was presented the opportunity to pursue this position 10 years ago, it’s been our primary objective as a corporate entity to move towards a more “AI first” approach, while still prioritising the health of the people. Essentially, at Health AI, our goal is driving our nation’s healthcare system into a new age, (screen goes black) an age of AI.
Title Card
Piracy is a crime music plays from DVD, Main character in room
Main Character – What? State of confusion
music plays, shows experimentation by Health AI on people
Knock on the door scene cuts before you see who it is
Cybersecurity Guy – Triangulating Position… And we’ve got a lock on him
Ends with laptop closing
[Albert Ibarra voiceover idea: “There are three types of people in the world. Those who are there to save people, And those who want to watch the world burn and those who rule over them. Our Health AI decides who lives and who dies, Health AI will bring uniformity to this horrible world”]
Characters/Costume design brainstorm:
Albert Ibarra (Zach)
- A funny shirt and very casual overall: turtleneck and jeans
Main Character (Zach)
- A suit
Health AI Cyber-Security Specialist (Zach)
- Something dark and covered
News Interviewer (Alina)
- The news interviewer is wearing a professional, corporate like outfit
Storyboard (illustrated by Alina):

Original rough layout of scenes/sequencing:
Scene 1: person (main character) running toward from something falls over looks up at company logo on a building – cuts between scenes 1 and 2 with L and J cuts
Scene 2: cuts to evil corporate guy antagonist on top of said building in a news interview talking about Health AI’s company “values” – this scene introduces antagonist as well as the company, Health AI
Scene 3: shows movie title then flashback to main character in a dark room torrenting books from sketchy book piracy website:
- Dan McQuillan – Resisting AI: An Anti-fascist Approach to Artificial Intelligence
- Ken Eriksson – Dangers of artificial intelligence
- fulldocument_unreleasedHEALTH_AI_humantesting2025.pdf
and in the background the camera pans to a tv showing that one anti-piracy ad on a DVD they’re watching. Main character downloads “fulldocument_unreleasedHEALTH_AI_humantesting2025.pdf” out of curiosity, showing the unreleased info about Health AI.
Scene 4: flashback to Health AI’s unethical psychological experiments – scene cuts between these flashbacks and main character reading the documents on a computer, still with the anti-piracy ad playing in the background
- For when the unethical psychological experiment plays something from ch
Scene 5: knock on door (audience expects it to be someone about to catch main character committing copyright infringement by downloading books and pdf).
Scene 6: shows Health AI’s cybersecurity team seeding the files that main character is downloading so they can see traffic of IP addresses downloading the files (cuts between scene 5 and 6)
end
Filming Locations original brainstorm:
6 Munroe Lane (Albany Auckland Council Building) Scene 1 (Google Maps Street View)
Health and Safety – Cars moving around be aware of giving way to cars and other people

260 Oteha Valley Road (Albany Mitre Ten) Scene 2
Health and Safety – Keep well away from the edge as it is on the roof of a building

School Common Room Scene 3 ???
Storage Room (Junior College) Scene 4 and 5

Filming process:
- Firstly, we used the school art room to film the scene where the main character is pirating books and comes across the corporate documents. The process for this scene included me filming Zach as the main character while Alina held a torch over Zach for the lighting. Then a few days later we decided to meet at/near the Albany Mitre 10 which was where we filmed the main character running scene as well as the news report scene. About a week later, we filmed the cyber-security office scene in the junior college storage room, then during the holidays, Zach filmed the a couple scenes himself at his house that included Albert Ibarra’s in the Health AI head office, and I filmed most of the close up scenes that show the computer screen, DVDs, the TV being turned off, and the anti-piracy ad. All of the filming was quite successful, especially considering how we used multiple places for one room in a lot of scenes, such as my bedroom and the art room both appearing as the same room but from different angles in the film opening.

Rough Cuts review:
I was unfortunately absent on the day that the rough cuts review was happening so I wasn’t able to present anything with my group. Since I also had the role of post-production, Zach and Alina did not have access to the in-progress edit since I had it on my laptop, although they did share some raw footage and we did receive some feedback:

The feedback wasn’t exactly useful since it was all based on the raw footage that hadn’t been edited at all, although later once the final edit was complete and shown to the class, all feedback was extremely positive. For example, a lot of people said the edit looked “professional”.
